If I could sum up what I hope to capture with this travel blog it would be my favorite word: obscure. I'll explain more but let me give you some background first.
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with learning about different cultures, people, and places. As a current anthropology undergraduate I get to channel my innate curiosity into studying world cultures in depth; why they are the way they are, how they got that way, and what that means to people's everyday lives. But learning about different cultures in school isn't nearly enough to satisfy my travel addiction. In 2019 I had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and live and work on a farm there as part of my research on traditional farming methods. Just for good measure I went to Canada that same summer and worked on a different farm through the WWOOF program (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). After a few months of almost continual travel, I emerged with a sense of awe about the places I had been, as well as considerably more experience harvesting bananas with a machete. I especially appreciated the fact that I actually lived in each place, allowing time to make friends with locals and see the area through their eyes. This is where I discovered my love of unconventional travel. I realized that it isn't just where you travel, but also how you travel that makes it interesting.
Finding new and interesting ways to travel is part of the fun for me. Whether it be working on a farm, roadtripping, or backpacking, I am always on the lookout for different ways to get from point A to Point B. Alongside stories from the road, you can expect to find a healthy dose of backpacking and hiking routes on this blog, as this is one of my favorite ways to explore the world.
So back to my favorite word.
Obscure is my favorite word because I find that obscure things are often at least equally or more interesting than well-known things, especially when it comes to traveling. I like tourist traps just as much as the next person, but I find that out-of-the way places and experiences are so much more captivating. My mission on this website is to show you the more obscure side of the world. Here, you can find detailed travel guides from my recent trips, stories from past adventures, and anything else obscure.
